Purposely driven to spit at us and hurt us! Why Rick Warren, Bam? Leona Helmsley not available?

Rick Warren, the author of "Purpose Driven Life" has been invited by Barack Obama to offer a prayer at his inauguration! That is just great! Gay-hater and Queen-of-Mean, Leona Helmsley, who is dead, must be laughing out loud in hell right this minute!

This is a spit in the eye to the GBLT community in particular, and to anyone who supports equality, dignity and justice under the law. Warren, in my personal opinion, is one of the world's most selfish homophobes. He made sure we lost the Prop 8 and we lost. He is against gay marriage. Obama wants a government full of diverse view -- not good enough for us. Obama may find himself in a sticky spot but it is not too late to take Warren off his Inauguration Program.

Barack Obama:

That dialogue, I think is part of what my campaign has been all about. We're not gonna agree on every single issue. What we have to do is be able to create an atmosphere where we can disagree with out being disagreeable. That's what America is about. Part of the magic of this country is that we are diverse and noisy and opinionated.

Except of course, Rick Warren hates gay people!

Daily Kos wrote:
Warren dodged Waldman's question about whether he supported civil unions or domestic partnerships, answering instead, "I support full equal rights for everyone in America," adding that he only opposes a "redefinition" of marriage. He went on to say he's opposed to gay marriage the same way he is opposed to a brother and sister marrying (that would be incest), a man marrying a child (that would be statutory rape), or someone having multiple spouses (that would be polygamy).

Pressed by Waldman, Warren said he considered those crimes equivalent to gay marriage. They couldn't find someone who didn't support Proposition 8, and who gave a bullshit reason for that support?

People for the American Way, said the Saddle Back church leader and popular author doesn't represent the values Barack Obama ran on during his successful White House bid.

Kathryn Kolbert, President of People for the American Way:
I'm sure that Warren's supporters will portray his selection as an appeal to unity by a president who is committed to reaching across traditional divides. Others may explain it as a response to Warren inviting then-Sen. Obama to speak on AIDS and candidate Obama to appear at a forum, both at his church. But the sad truth is that this decision further elevates someone who has in recent weeks actively promoted legalized discrimination and denigrated the lives and relationships of millions of Americans.

Joe Solmonese President of HRC:
You have "tarnished the view that gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender Americans have a place at your table...We feel a deep level of disrespect when one of architects and promoters of an anti-gay agenda is given the prominence and the pulpit of your historic nomination.

Solmonese ripped Warren for pushing for California's Proposition 8 that made gay marriage unconstitutional in the state, and urged Obama to disinvite him.
