Heard of Remote Area Medical, or RAM?

Nothing gay about this but the Area Medical (RAM) was founded to bring free medicine to remote parts of the world but now also helps thousands of the estimated 47 million Americans who have no health insurance and others who are underinsured. Scott Pelley reports.

According to a Scott Pelley's reports on CBS recently, thousands showed up at an exhibition hall in Tennessey for a free medical check-up.

One of the decisive issues in the presidential campaign is likely to be healthcare. 47 millions living in this country have no health insurance and that is just a start. Millions more are underinsured/uninsured.

Recently we heard RAM dropped doctors and medicine into the jungle of Amazon. But these days this charity is throwing America a lifeline. RAM set up its massive clinic for a weekend in Tennessey recently. The founder heard many had painful toothache, took all covers for the weekend and provided medical care for the people who showed up -- people who could not pay dental, medical or vision. Some had driven 200 miles after hearing about the volunteers. RAM also said that it would find volunteer-doctors to care for people with cancer and diabetes after they left. The frist clue came at midnight. People in pains didn't want a chance to be left out. Many showed up in the 27- degree cold nights and days. At the gate many waited when it ended. RAM made 500 pairs glasses, did 94 mammograms, extracted 1066 teeth, did 557 fillings, when they called the last number, more than 400 were turned away.

According to RAM, the numbers are getting higher either because RAM is getting better known or the healthcare in this country is getting worse.

How does RAM pay for all of that? They continue to ask people to donate to RAM. So, when you do get the chance, donate to RAM today. Since March, when CBS broke the story, RAM had received more than $2 millions. We've also heard that more and more gay doctors and nurses are volunteering...their next stop -- West Virginia.
