Queerer but not so Heavenly after all...

February last year, Glenn and I drove up to South Lake Tahoe for a couple days of skiing and escape. Tahoe is too far from us in San Francisco for a day trip. But it’s close enough (under 4 hour drive, sans traffic) for a weekend getaway. It was Glenn’s first attempt at skiing. I say, he did remarkably well given his lack of any prior experience skiing. He even skied off the famous "Powerhorn" route -- a thick powdery slope, a few times without falling (no small feat, for those who haven’t tried skiing yet.) He came home quite sore and bruised in a few places. But I think enough of the bug was caught that he’ll be willing to try it again this year. But sadly I moved back to NYC and left Glenn back in SFO to ski on his own.

Glenn went by himself last February and had so much to say about (that's saying something for a guy who doesn't complain much about anything in life).

I’d just like to leave one note for anyone else planning to board or ski at Heavenly in South Lake next year.

**Do not rent your equipment from Heavenly Sports on the mountain. I repeat, do NOT do this -- unless you like waiting in line for up to two hours, only to get inside and deal with the chaotic process of renting from the most unorganized team of rude, clueless “equipment specialists”.

**Go to Sierra-On-Tahoe instead or Sugar Bowl but sleep in Heavenly cos I have to admit the place is queerer than others, the hotels are great (with many casinos and great shopping/dining)

I made this mistake once, Glenn twice. We won’t make it again. We don't you to make the same mistake. The equipment is old; the specialists lack any knowledge in proper adjustment of basic bindings. It’s pretty bad when the instructors employed by the same resort advise all of their students to avoid the mountain rental shop at all costs.

Instead, either rent locally and drive up with your gear. Or rent at any one of the small shops closer to the lake. Or get your gear from the Burton demo shop in front of the California lodge.

Just don’t plan on renting anything from Heavenly. Great drops, great view, great place to let off steam. But lousy service at the equipment renting center.
